Seasonal allergies are upon us…again. Ragweed  being the primary culprit during this fall season here in Charlotte. Since I have had so many people reaching out to me for vestibular therapy for their dizziness or vertigo the past 2 weeks I thought I would let you know that you.are.not.alone!

Why is this happening?

With seasonal allergies the immune system is being dramatic 💁🏽‍♀️and over-reacting to things like pollen, ragweed, etc. The immune response is what leads to symptoms of congestion, runny nose, fullness in the face/ears/sinuses, etc. This diffuse/non-specific inflammation can lead to dysregulation of pressure in the Eustachian tube and/or irritation of the vestibular(cochlear) nerve. These structures are a part of the communication system to/from our brain to our inner ear which houses our vestibular system. Our vestibular system is basically our balance organ so it helps keep us upright and balanced. When this communication system is disrupted this is what leads to the sensation of dizziness, vertigo, disequilibrium, disorientation, imbalance, and/or nausea.

How can I fix it?!

✨For this specific issue it is a multi-factorial approach - Vestibular Physical Therapy may be indicated which is where I come in! My vestibular patients are one of the reason I offer mobile PT - where I can come to you in your home, office…wherever so that you don’t have to drive or coordinate transportation when feeling so crummy. Your treatment will vary depending on what your body specifically needs!

We may also discuss addressing the immune response/inflammatory component correlated with your dizziness as well as some secondary symptoms like nausea that can occur. Some things that may help are:

🍯Local honey and/or elderberry syrup. My personal fav is Honest Elderberry.

💊OTC anti-histamines (to decrease the allergic reaction), decongestants, steroid dose pack (calm inflammatory response).**consult your MD or DO

🤢To help with nausea:

  • ginger mints, ginger, or really anything ginger!

  • Peppermint or spearmint scents/essential oil diffusion

💊OTC anti-nausea medication like dramamine, immortal **consult your MD or DO

✨I hope this helps you get back to moving towards your Meaningful Movement!
